To complement the lighthearted essays, I also solicited and assigned several serious pieces, including “Costume Drama,” a first-person narrative of a woman’s struggle to dress the part as she battled breast cancer. “Dressed Not to Kill,” a history of medical fashion, revealed that the outfits nineteenth-century surgeons wore while performing operations—blood-encrusted street clothes they never laundered—often led to the untimely demise of their patients. “Boutique Medicine” portrayed the promise of medical fashion for diagnosis and treatment. The special report allowed us to provide what our readers relished most: offbeat perspectives on medicine, humor, and a strong presence of doctor’s voices. With these elements, the special report helped fulfill the underlying mission of the magazine: to make readers feel connected to the Harvard Medical School community by informing, entertaining, and inspiring them. THE RESPONSE: The fashion issue charmed alumni of all ages. “When I opened the pages, I found myself pulled in,” one older surgeon reported. “The issue is marvelous. The design is elegant and the articles insightful. Thanks for a wonderful issue!” The Boston Herald devoted nearly its entire Page 3 to an article about the issue. Beneath the headline, “Dr. Feelgood, Meet Dr. Lookgood: Harvard Mag Plays Up Fashion for MDs,” the article opened with, “Move over, McDreamy.” The issue also earned two silver medals from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. For the seven deadly sins issue, I asked seven alumni to choose one of the sins and to write an essay about its role in medicine. The topic inspired them, and they infused their essays with elements our readers seemed to enjoy the most: drama, poignancy, and wit. For the final page of the issue, I asked a half dozen other alumni to propose the eighth deadly sin in medicine, an assignment that led to brief yet insightful passages. THE RESPONSE: The Council for Advancement and Support of Education awarded the issue a grand gold medal in the Periodical Special Issues category and a silver medal in the Special Interest Magazines category. “It wouldn’t have occurred to any of our panel that an issue about the seven deadly sins would naturally fit into a medical college’s alumni magazine,” one of the judges’ reports read. “That thought-driven surprise alone was enough to get our attention. But what made this issue a hands-down favorite was the experience of reading the fine prose of seven Harvard medical alumni, who each reflected, via a poignant and/or humorous essay, on one of the seven deadlies and how they play out in the world of medicine. What would compel someone to scribble compulsively down the length of her arm, even while driving? And what makes Mona Lisa’s smile so elusive? When I noticed Harvard Medical School faculty members delving into a range of such inquiries, I was inspired to capture the richness of their findings in a special report on the neurobiology of the arts. I distilled the lead article, “Light Vision,” from a book a professor had written on how our visual processing systems affect our perceptions of art. I interviewed a neurologist who had suffered firsthand the writing disorder she treated in her patients. I solicited an essay from a physician who prescribed poetry to his patients, and I asked a colleague to profile several neuroscientists dedicated to understanding the brain’s astonishing natural wiring for music. The resultant issue showcased the talent, passion, and compassion of the school’s faculty. THE RESPONSE: Readers were lavish in their praise of the issue. “My husband and I are fighting over the neurobiology issue,” one alumna wrote. “The beast won today and ran off with it to work!” The issue was also one of two that led to the magazine’s being named the Robert Sibley Magazine of the Year Award, also known as a Grand Gold Medal from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. CASE judges also gave the issue a gold medal in the Special Interest Magazines category and a silver medal in the Periodical Special Issues category. I was beginning to have my doubts when Editorial Board members began recounting their stories. “You’re gonna love this one!” they promised, before launching into anecdotes they had remembered as side-splitting. But their eager narrations seemed to lose their punch—and punchlines—in the retelling. So I gingerly solicited articles from a trusted few. To complement those essays, I asked to reprint “The Etiology and Treatment of Childhood,” a faculty member’s inspired parody of academic journal articles. For “Comic Relief,” I collected the best of the doctors’ comedic moments. I also plucked an autobiographical tale from the archives. THE RESPONSE: The issue had been out less than a week when I received an urgent phone call: a hospital department chief needed 20 copies of the issue right away to share with his colleagues. “Who says Harvard doesn’t have a sense of humor?” one alumnus wrote. Another deemed the issue, “Brilliant, simply brilliant.” My favorite response, though, came in email form, as an alumna described another physician’s response to the issue: “When he’s feeling outgoing he comes into my office like a gazelle anxiously stepping into a clearing, tries to think of something to say, and then darts away again. The last time that happened, though, I handed him your latest issue. He stood in my office reading it for about ten minutes, making increasingly distressing snorting and gurgling noises. At the same time, in keeping with the issue’s celebratory theme, the overall mood was deliberately gleeful, with playful pieces meant to engage readers’ wits, including a quiz on arcane bits of school lore; “Connect the Docs,” a matching game that asked readers to pair noteworthy alumni with their nonmedical accomplishments; and “Harvard’s Index,” a lighthearted sidebar that borrowed the “Harper’s Index” format to offer glimpses into the school’s history through numbers. In “Like Shakespeare and the Bible,” I was able to write a wry chronicle of reader critiques of the magazine across the decades, including a notable epithet from 1981: “I have been trying to analyze what is so repulsive about the latest issue of the Bulletin and have finally come to the conclusion that it’s not the literary copy but, like an inflamed carbuncle, it hurts just to look at it.” THE RESPONSE: “The 75-year issue is a triumph!” one alumnus wrote. “It has wit, insight, history, people, things, ideas, and feeling—all in delicious proportion. It’s a joy to read and pore over, and I will treasure my copy forever. You deserve the plaudits and appreciation of everyone who has ever been at Harvard Medical School.” The issue received a gold medal in the Periodical Special Issues category from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, an award of distinction from the Association of American Medical Colleges in the External Audience Periodicals category, and a Clarion Award in the Best Overall External Magazine (Circulation Under 100,000) category from the Association for Women in Communications. It was also named a finalist for an Eddie Award from Folio: Magazine in the Healthcare/Medical Category. Yet the most significant honor came from the alumni themselves. When Harvard Medical School celebrated the 100th anniversary of the groundbreaking of its original quadrangle, the administration invited the Alumni Association to make a single contribution to a time capsule that would be kept sealed for another century. But not all physicians had the time to write their accounts. So, in some instances, when I suspected the results would prove irresistible, I would go to great lengths to capture both story and voice. While planning the five senses issue, for example, I requested an essay on synesthesia from one of my favorite writers, a Harvard neurologist whose own brain translated the alphabet into colors. Yet she turned me down. “You know I love working with you on the magazine,” she said, “but I just have too many deadlines.” She sounded wistful, so I began telling her about tantalizing content we’d already planned for Harvard Medicine’s special issue on the senses. One doctor, an oenophile, would write about using his olfactory talents to diagnose disease, while another would explore the mysteries of finicky eating. By the time I’d listed research articles on face blindness, gustatory hallucinations, and the tactile acuity of tai chi practitioners, she’d had enough. “I hate you,” she said. We both knew it wasn’t true. The next day she emailed me 5,000 words she had written on synesthesia over the years. Together we shaped that hodgepodge of neurological data, historic details, sensory images, and childhood memories into an article. Her essay became just one powerful element in an issue that received both reader acclaim and gold medals from Folio: Magazine and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. In another instance, I turned a grant proposal into a cover story about an elegantly simple solution for a preventable cause of intellectual disability. Still other stories—including a how-to roundup, a nature photography essay, and an anesthesiologist’s humorous account of moonlighting for a zoo—stemmed from interviews with doctors. MOST NOTABLE RESPONSE: One of the articles I wrote in collaboration with a Harvard doctor—the one taken from a grant proposal—yielded the single best response in my dozen years of editing the magazine. A Peace Corps worker in Uzbekistan had read the cover story about an alumnus’s innovative strategies for introducing iodine to populations in remote areas of Central Asia, where natural deficiencies in the mineral can leave people vulnerable to a range of mental and physical disorders. The Peace Corps volunteer asked the doctor for help, as Uzbekistani people face critical shortages of iodine.
